Spring Delayed

I can hear the announcement over the echoey platform tannoy system, “BING BONG, We regret to announce that the UK service to Spring arriving in March, has been delayed due to snow on the line. We apologise for any disruption this may cause”.

Spring has definitely taken a break and I’ve taken one along with it, which is why I’ve not written on here for some time. I was also preoccupied with several other things, one of them being procrastination and lazyness. Last week we dipped back into winter with several parts of the country (including us) getting a dumping of snow and being inflicted with freezing temperatures and winds. This week has marginally improved but it still is cold, windy and now very wet.

There was supposed to be a beautiful picture of daffodils in the lawn for the March GBBD but I’m not exposing my camera to that rain. The forecast for the coming week is yet more miserable grey weather.

Looking back at what I got up to around this time last year; I was dealing with a very large pile of manure, having to get up early most mornings to apply it to the garden before work. I am very thankful there’s nothing like that to do right now as I don’t fancy working through buckets of sodden manure on saturated ground – especially before leaving for work.

I would like to get on and finish tidying the garden and above all, take the greenhouses down, but with temperatures set to fall again, it could be April before I’m confident that sheltering plants wont freeze and drown.

Meanwhile the rain continues.

We are having a similar experience here. So strange after last year's extra-early spring.

Hi Jason, it couldn't be any more different to last year could it? I had expected to have the last of the frosts by now, but here we are with a layer of now on the ground, freezing to ice overnight! What is a gardener to do?

It doesn't know whether it's coming or going! Dawn yesterday morning arrived with a blizzard. The snow didn't pitch here, but 10 miles up the road everything was white! Then, by the afternoon, we had lovely sunshine. Snowdrops down in North Dorset and South Wiltshire are really late, banks of them spotted on a drive last week - at least a month overdue. Primroses a bit early, and tulips? The leaves in my garden are up and healthy looking, but really too early if we get a heavy frost. What? What? What? However, I am looking forward to "real Spring", followed by "real Summer" this year! What are the chances d'you think?

Hi Mrs Mac, at the moment, the chances of a "normal" Summer don't look good, especially given what it's like at the moment. I will blame it on the slow economic recovery!

Sunil, this weather is certainly getting me down. The only upside, when the milder days arrive we wont half appreciate them.

Hi Alistair, it's getting me very frustrated too and at this rate, we'll be setting the clocks back an hour before the decent weather decides to arrive!

It should be getting warmer here by now and we have a freak snow storm forecast instead. But my garden has started to green up a bit and the daffodils are blooming, so I'm trying to be patient with it all. Four months from now we'll all be moaning about how hot it is. :)

Hi, my garden is trying to green up, but it keeps on getting "whited" over and it's really not helping. I really would welcome more opportunities to moan about how hot it is during the summer, but looking outside at the moment, it's going to take a real stretch of the imagination!

I wish I had a better understanding of what the weather patterns are that are bringing basically the same weather to much of the northern US and the UK. I finally spotted some buds on my daffodils yesterday, but I'm still a couple of weeks away from blooms.

Hi Jean, the weather is something that I'm getting far more interested in the more I garden since it dictates so much. After the cold March, we're now expecting our "April showers", so I'm bracing for a wet and probably windy month.
